Welcome to Seniority - My Time Here at Justin-Siena

The minute hand finally turns.

10:30 A.M.

The end of the day announcements come on, but I’m almost certain that no one’s listening. Not even me.

The bell eventually rings.

Chaos ensues.

I turn in my last final of the year and walk out of Room 416, suddenly engulfed in the craziness and madness that was the end of the school year.

Air horns blared out throughout the hall. To the left of me, a group of senior jocks were screaming random obscenities. To the right, sophomore girls were proclaiming their undying love for each other with a goodbye along the lines of “OMG GIRLIE DON’T FORGET TO TEXT ME.”

Shouts and laughter filled the air. Books were tossed away; lockers emptied.

Freshmen were relishing the fact that they’ll no longer be at the bottom of the food chain next year. Sophomores were left to worry about the upcoming, dreaded junior year. And as for the juniors - well, I guess I can only speak for myself on this one.

Because unlike most of the other juniors in my school who were rejoicing in the fact that next year, we’d be the kings and queens of Justin-Siena High School, I actually said to myself, in utter disbelief,

“I don’t think I’m ready to be a senior.”

It was all too surreal for me.

Just my way of thanking God for giving me the opportunity to suffer through springtime allergies, sleep deprivation, SAT’s, ACT’s, final projects, term papers and finals - all within the span of a month.
I’m sure all you other high school students out there feel the same way.
Especially if you’re Catholic.
Take heart brothers and sisters. There’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Here’s a meme to celebrate in the meantime.

Abandoning senseless expectations.

My sanity is brought into question yet again as I near my upcoming junior year. Don’t get me wrong - I’m very excited to face the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead with God at my side. However, I know that next year will be loaded with hundreds of expectations and I am confused as to how I should respond.

The same questions seem to lurk at the back of my mind, waiting to reveal themselves to me at the opportune moment. Will I still be able to juggle the stressful classes I’ve been taking for most of my life? What impact do I want to make in someone’s life now that I am a student leader? How will I accept the challenges that come with being a new upperclassman?

Today, as I took the time to step back and take these things to prayer in Adoration, a deep sense of His presence overwhelmed me. And it was only then that I understood what God was trying to tell me all along whenever I’d feel weighed down by all these pressing expectations.
